Tips to Create an Inviting Home for the Holidays

Okay so you've got the turkey, the Christmas tree is up and shining, the driveway is shoveled, the fireplace is on, but do you have room for all your guests? If you're planning on having the holiday dinner at your house this year, or perhaps throwing a New Years celebration, there are some important ways to make your guests feel comfortable and take that extra stress away. Read through the holiday tip sheet below to get your home ready for company over the holidays!

An Inviting Home for the Holidays:
1. Find a tree to suit your space:
While everyone loves the elegance of a tall and full tree, be sure your tree is complimentary to the room by choosing one that is proportional to the space. The top of the tree should sit approximately 6"-12" below the ceiling. This allows room for the tree topper, as well as some clearance above so the space does not look crowded. Also measure out the area of floor space that the tree will take up and be sure it won't interfere with the flow of traffic in the room.

2. Avoid Clutter
Like most, you have probably collected a great assortment of holiday decorations. To avoid over decorating, follow this rule - for every holiday decoration you put out, a non-seasonal item should be removed and packed away until after the holidays.

3. Asymmetrical decorating is all the rage.
A room should balance, but hanging the same decoration on either side of a fireplace, or hanging matching wreaths in all your windows may not be the answer. Instead, balance the space with some glittery ornaments, or perhaps a classic stocking. Have fun mixing it up, and break out of the symmetry.

4. Not into the traditional red and green?
Glitz and glam are in this year, so if the traditional red and green don't suit your style, choose colours such as silver, gold, and blue instead. Ornaments are available in a variety of colours this season, so pick ones that best suit your style. For a more contemporary look, why not black and white? You can add some glam with bold colours like purple or even hot pink!
