1. Find a tree to suit your space
While everyone loves the elegance of a tall and full tree, be sure your tree is complimentary to the room by choosing one that is proportional to the space. The top of the tree should sit approximately 6"-12" below the ceiling. This allows room for the tree topper, as well as some clearance above so the space does not look crowded. Also measure out the area of floor space that the tree will take up and be sure it won't interfere with the flow of traffic in the room.
2. Avoid Clutter
Like most, you have probably collected a great assortment of holiday decorations. To avoid over decorating, follow this rule - for every holiday decoration you put out, a non-seasonal item should be removed and packed away until after the holidays.
3. Asymmetrical decorating is all the rage
A room should balance, but hanging the same decoration on either side of a fireplace, or hanging matching wreaths in all your windows may not be the answer. Instead, balance the space with some glittery ornaments, or perhaps a classic stocking. Have fun mixing it up, and break out of the symmetry.
4. Not into the traditional red and green?
Glitz and glam are in this year, so if the traditional red and green don't suit your style, choose colours such as silver, gold, and blue instead. Ornaments are available in a variety of colours this season, so pick ones that best suit your style. For a more contemporary look, why not black and white? You can add some glam with bold colours like purple or even hot pink!
5. Organize your entrance
Keep your guests from tripping over shoes/boots and avoid a clutter of coats in the front closet. Have plenty of mats set out, and a place to put coats. If you have a closet in your entry, clear out all your coats to make room for the guests. Otherwise, find a room that is not being used that has a place to lay the coats, such as a bed or a couch.
6. Serve snacks for your festivities that can be prepared ahead of time
It's your party, and you deserve to enjoy it, but it's no fun if you're trapped in the kitchen all night preparing food. Choose finger foods that can be served cold and avoid hot foods. These don't stand up well throughout the evening, and will take you away from the party to prepare.
7. There's a first time for everything...
but when it comes to recipes, make sure your first time trying it is not the night of your party! Have a test run of any dishes you are not sure about to ensure their success the night of the party.
8. Eco-Friendly is chic
No one likes the build-up of dishes at the end of a party, but disposable can be taboo these days. If you're concerned about your good dishes, find light-weight reusable holiday dishes that can be cleaned and packed away for the following year. If you must use disposable, look for dishes that are made from recycled materials, or better yet, find ones that are recyclable, and set out recycle bins for your guests.
